Jenny's Story: a life changed by Jesus
As a young mum who had fled an abusive relationship, Jenny found herself on a destructive path of alcohol and drug abuse. Her life story would again be changed after a chance meeting with Antioch planters Amy Woodfield and her husband Ben. Jenny explains more:
“In my early twenties I fell into a fun, party lifestyle, but this soon crossed an invisible line, and I became addicted to alcohol. I relied on drinking to get me through the day. To the outside world, I was coping; going to work and taking my children to school. But behind closed doors I was struggling.
“After a heavy weekend of drinking I had reached a really low place, looking in the mirror I could see nothing but darkness. That same Sunday I received a text message from our local vicar’s wife Amy, inviting me to a barbeque. I replied to say that I couldn’t as I was an alcoholic. These were words I’d never even uttered to my own family, but I felt desperate for help.
“The kindness shown by Amy and her husband Ben, the vicar at the planted church in Oldhams estate, was immediate. They welcomed Jenny and her children into their home offering practical and emotional support.
“Ben helped me to see that Jesus was there for me and I didn’t need to look for love in the wrong places. As I sat and prayed, pleading for God to help me, I physically felt a huge weight lifting off my shoulders. This experience was the start of a transformation in my life...

Our story….
There is a council estate in Bolton called Oldhams estate. In 2014 a small group of people, part of the local parish church; St Paul’s Astley Bridge, began to pray and dream about how they could plant church within Oldhams estate. In January 2016, after much prayerful waiting, Sunday worship started.
Who is Oldhams Church?
Oldhams Church is a community of Jesus’ followers. We are seeking to become better followers of Jesus, better at sharing him with our friends and neighbours and better at being his family.
Oldhams Church is made up of many different people, some who have been Christians for many years, some for just a few weeks and some who are yet to call themselves Christian.
On Sundays we gather at 3.00pm at the Barlow Park Centre, BL1 7NT on Oldhams estate. The meeting lasts just over an hour. There are songs, prayer, brews, treats and learning from the Bible.
Throughout the week we do many things as a church family (to find out more you’ll need to come along on a Sunday!) These include; Football training, open house food, all age / all ability Bible Study, Celebrate Recovery 12-step group.
Jenny says,
“I was in a dark, lonely place for many years, and alcohol had destroyed my faith, hope and was destroying me and my family. In 2017 I found Oldhams Church and my relationship with Jesus. I haven't touched a drop of alcohol since. A true miracle from God”
John says,
“Since being part of church I’ve got people I can rely on, they are my family. Jesus has done that for me and he’s been there even when I haven’t known him.”
